Iowa police: Dept. investigates racial profiling

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines police say the department vigorously investigates all allegations of racial profiling.

Sgt. Daniel Blom says the Des Moines Police Department investigated 20 public complaints in the past two years and none were allegations of racial profiling.

Blom says in the same two years, the department also did not receive racial profiling complaints from the Iowa Civil Rights Commission and other entities that investigate such matters.

The comments come after a coalition of advocacy groups launched a project Tuesday to document cases of alleged racial profiling in Des Moines. The groups want to map locations of alleged racial profiling.

Blom also says the coalition turned down the department’s offer to have an investigator at the interviews.

A coalition spokeswoman did not immediately return a message left Wednesday night.
