Study: Most twins can be born without a C-section

New research suggests that moms pregnant with twins do not need to schedule a cesarean section because most can safely give birth without surgery.

It is the latest research to question the need for C-sections, which are done in one-third of all births in the United States and three-fourths of those involving twins.

Multiple births carry more risk for complications but no large studies have tested whether C-sections lower that risk. Canadian doctors led one of 2,800 moms whose twins were in good position for birth. Half of the moms were scheduled to have C-sections and the rest, vaginal births.

Deaths and serious problems in newborns and moms were similar for both groups. Results are in Thursday’s New England Journal of Medicine.
