CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Some coaches at the University of Northern Iowa are encouraging students to trade in shirts promoting rival schools for some purple Panther gear.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that wrestling coach Doug Schwab and men’s basketball coach Ben Jacobson set up a spot in the student union last week where students could exchange shirts backing another school for a UNI T-shirt. The trading post will be set up again next week.
Schwab says he’s made about 100 trades so far.
Organizers of the effort haven’t decided what to do with the shirts backing other schools. Most support Iowa State and the University of Iowa.
Ideas include recycling the cloth for use as diapers or rugs.
Athletic Director Troy Dannen says the trade-in is important as a way to promote UNI.
