Iowa DOT plans to reissue undercover gov’t plates

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Department of Transportation is planning to rescind some 3,200 license plates issued to government agencies that have a special confidential status and reissue only those that are justified for sensitive work.

Gov. Terry Branstad ordered DOT in July to conduct a review aimed at reducing the number of such plates, which are designed to protect government workers but also allow them to avoid tickets from traffic cameras.

DOT Spokeswoman Andrea Henry says the review found “no clear indication” that the plates had been abused by government officials. She says many of them were no longer being used or not with the vehicles to which they were originally assigned.

She says DOT is planning to ask agencies to send them all back. DOT will reissue those that are necessary.
