Parties set nominating conventions for Senate seat

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The state Republican and Democratic parties have set dates for conventions to nominate candidates for a state Senate seat that became open following the resignation of Sen. Kent Sorenson.

Republicans will hold their convention at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at the American Legion Hall in Indianola.

Democrats will hold their convention at 7 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Martensdale-St. Marys Community School District office.

The nominees from each party for the District 13 seat will go before voters in a Nov. 19 special election.

The position became open when Sorenson, a Republican from Milo, resigned last week after an independent investigator concluded he likely broke ethics rules in receiving money from presidential candidate Michele Bachmann’s political action committee and presidential campaign.

Sorenson says his resignation wasn’t an admission of wrongdoing.
