Clinton police charge teen with cemetery vandalism

CLINTON, Iowa (AP) — Police in Clinton have arrested a teenager in connection with vandalism at a cemetery, where workers have been puzzled by the repeated toppling of grave markers.

The Clinton Herald reports (http://bit.ly/GNhLNS ) police on Wednesday cited a 17-year-old on a charge of first-degree criminal mischief.

The Associated Press typically doesn’t name minors charged with crimes.

The arrest follows a surge of vandalism at the eastern Iowa cemetery, where workers would often spend hours each day setting grave markers back into place.

Police estimate there has been about $10,000 in damage to tombstones.

Police say they were aided in identifying a suspect by surveillance video that was released to the public Tuesday.
