Iowa City woman guilty in vehicular homicide

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa City woman has pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide while drunk and now faces a mandatory sentence of 25 years in prison.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports (http://icp-c.com/1ca7u9d ) 51-year-old Miranda Lalla admitted to running over and killing 44-year-old Pamela Gross with a pickup truck in June 2012.

Lalla and Gross got into a fight before the accident, which came after Lalla was drinking at a nearby bar.

By pleading guilty, prosecutors agreed not to pursue an allegation that Lalla fled the accident. Had she been convicted of that charge, she would have been required to serve at least 70 percent of her sentence.

She now has no minimum term.

Besides the 25 year sentence, Lalla must pay restitution of $150,000 to Gross’ estate.

Formal sentencing will be Dec. 9.
