Police: Suspect shot by officer had BB gun

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a man shot this week by a Davenport police officer was armed with a BB gun.

Two officers were responding to a burglary report Thursday when they encountered 21-year-old Ryan Adam Franklin, of Davenport, in an alley. The officers reported that the shooting occurred after Franklin disobeyed orders to stop and reached for a gun in his waistband.

The Scott County Sheriff’s Office tells the Quad-City Times (http://bit.ly/188kknE ) that the gun turned out to be a BB gun.

Franklin remains at a Davenport hospital after undergoing surgery. Police say his condition is improving.

Police say the officers involve were Michael Jacobsen and Thomas Runge. Police have declined to identify which officer shot Franklin, but both have been placed on routine administrative leave while the investigation continues.
