15,100 in Cedar Rapids race against breast cancer

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — More than 15,000 people turned out for a race to raise money to fight breast cancer at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.

More than $370,000 from race registrations go to the “Especially for You” fund, which provides mammography and other breast-care services for area individuals who cannot otherwise afford them.

Last year the fund helped 773 people receive more than 1,000 services in Linn County.

General Mills and Mercy Medical Center are co-founders of the race, which includes a 5K run, 5K walk and a one-mile family fun walk.

In its first year in 1991 the race drew just over 1,000 participants. This year 15,100 people registered for the Sunday race from 35 states. They included 93-year old Odessa Stout and 88-year old Tom Kaut.
