Iowa City considers 2-way traffic on 1-way streets

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Officials in Iowa City are studying whether to allow two-way traffic on what are now one-way streets.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports (http://icp-c.com/GWNWdy ) the county’s Metropolitan Planning Organization has nearly completed a study of Governor Street and likely will make a recommendation to the City Council next month about whether to make part of the street two-way.

City transportation planner John Yapp says analysts also have begun taking a look at other streets.

Yapp says one-way streets move traffic efficiently but tend to increase vehicle speeds and be confusing for visitors.

Iowa City returned two-way traffic to a two-block stretch of Washington Street last year and has received a positive response.

City Council member Terry Dickens, who owns a jewelry store on Washington Street, says customers like the change.
