DNR: E. Iowa lake filling fast, should open soon

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — After 26 years, work to create a lake in eastern Iowa is nearly complete.

The Department of Natural Resources says Lost Grove Lake has filled up more quickly than expected and that final work should be completed soon, allowing the state to open the lake.

The state selected the site in northern Scott County, between Eldridge and Princeton, for a lake in 1987.

The DNR began buying land in 1988 and had most pieces within seven years. However, it wasn’t until 2003 that the state bought the final parcel.

During that time, homes were built downstream, which prompted officials to require the dam that created the lake to meet higher design standards.

Crews are installing boat ramps and parking lots, and the lake will open as soon as it’s full.
