DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines has received a $300,000 grant to help improve one of the city’s oldest parks.
The city’s parks and recreation department announced Wednesday that the money will help Mac Rae Park, located just south of downtown Des Moines.
The funds were recently awarded by Resource Enhancement and Protection, a state program that invests in projects enhancing Iowa’s natural and cultural resources.
Money will be used to restore about 35 acres of savanna and woodland, and to create a soft surface nature trail through the restored savanna and woodland. The project will also include construction of a paved trail between the park and the Meredith Trail, which will link the park with the Central Iowa Trail System.
