Algona police investigate body on school grounds

ALGONA, Iowa (AP) — Police say a man whose body was found on property of the Algona High School/Middle School apparently killed himself.

Algona Police Chief Curtis Schipper told the Mason City Globe Gazette ( ) that the body found about 1:20 a.m. Friday has been identified as 23-year-old Shane Lee Ballenger.

Police says it appears he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Schipper says an autopsy is planned.

Algona Superintendent Marty Fonley says Ballenger graduated from Algona High School in 2008. Fonley, who was high school principal at that time, called Ballenger, “a nice kid, never in trouble.”

Fonley says Ballenger had served four years in the Marines and had recently been honorably discharged.

District officials canceled classes Friday to allow police to investigate the matter.
