Iowa man gets nearly 20 years for bank robberies

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A Waterloo man who robbed two small-town Iowa banks last year has been sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison.

A federal judge in Cedar Rapids issued the 235-month sentence Thursday to 38-year-old Steven Vandewalker.

Vandewalker admitted that he walked into a bank in Frederika in October 2012, carrying a handgun and wearing a baseball cap and mask.

He ordered a bank employee and a customer to get on the floor. He then hit the customer in the face with the handgun, breaking the customer’s right orbital socket. Vandewalker went behind the counter and had a teller give him cash from drawers and a safe, eventually fleeing with more than $36,000.

Vandewalker admitted that he also robbed a bank in Aurora, Iowa the prior month and made off with $11,000.
