Minn. museum becomes Smithsonian affiliate

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) — A central Minnesota museum is teaming up with the Smithsonian Institution.

Officials said Tuesday the Stearns History Museum in St. Cloud has become a Smithsonian Affiliate.

Smithsonian Affiliations Director Harold Closter says the Stearns Museum is the type of museum the Smithsonian has had its most successful partnerships with.

By being an affiliate, the Stearns Museum will have greater access to artifacts in the Smithsonian collection. Museum members also have the potential for more educational programs.

Stearns History Museum Executive Director Tim Hoheisel says benefits of becoming an affiliate will be gradual. Attendance at some affiliates has increased by as much as 50 percent as a result of loaned Smithsonian collections.

WJON-AM (http://bit.ly/1anyl0O) reports the museum pays an annual fee of $2,500 for the status.
