NORTHWOOD, Iowa (AP) — A northern Iowa man is taking his fight to keep backyard chickens to court.
Leo Hendrick, of Northwood, is going to Worth County on Tuesday to fight a ticket he received in September for keeping about a dozen chickens within city limits. A city ordinance makes it unlawful for a person to keep livestock within the city except by written consent of the council.
The council has previously denied Hendrick’s request to keep chickens.
Hendrick tells the Mason City Globe Gazette (http://bit.ly/1eaf3h9) that he and his family hunt, raise and grow their own food — including eggs.
Hendrick will be acting as his own attorney at Tuesday’s jury trial.
If convicted, he faces a $600 fine and up to 30 days in jail.
