Thousands without power in Des Moines, Urbandale

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Thousands in Des Moines and the Des Moines suburb of Urbandale found themselves without power Saturday morning, thanks to a mischievous squirrel.

MidAmerican spokeswoman Tina Pottoff tells Des Moines television station KCCI (http://bit.ly/1ea9P4I) that an estimated 8,800 customers were without power around 7 a.m. Saturday after a squirrel got into a substation, causing the disruption.

Pottoff said several thousand customers had their power restored by 9 a.m., and crews will continue working until all power is restored.
