ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. (AP) — Rescuers worked frantically to free five children trapped in a submerged car in suburban Minneapolis after it went off a highway ramp and into a frigid pond.
The car was under water for up to 45 minutes after Thursday’s crash. The children were unconscious and unresponsive when pulled from the vehicle. Their condition’s weren’t available late rin the day.
Rescuers smashed windows to get inside the car even as a tow truck winched it out.
Officials didn’t provide details on how the children were able to survive or whether the car had filled up with water before rescuers got to them.
The car’s driver was the children’s mother and stepmother. She made it out on her own. One witness described seeing her in the pond, screaming for help.
