DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Attorneys have presented opening statements in the murder trial of an Ankeny man accused of having his ex-wife’s lover killed.
The Des Moines Register reports (http://dmreg.co/1caA6Op ) prosecutor Mike Salvner said Friday in a Polk County courtroom that evidence and witness testimony shows 66-year-old Vernon Huser helped Louis Woolheater plan the death of Lance Morningstar. Defense attorney Alfredo Parrish said there’s no physical evidence linking Huser to the death.
Huser was convicted of first-degree murder in 2010. The Iowa Court of Appeals granted him a new trial in 2011.
Morningstar, who had an affair with Huser’s wife, was a former road worker whose body was found in 2005. Court documents show the Husers divorced in 2004.
Woolheater was convicted of first-degree murder in 2010 and is serving a life sentence.
