Dayton answers questions at college campus forum

WINONA, Minn. (AP) — Gov. Mark Dayton fielded questions on everything from frack sand mining to the importance of the liberal arts in a modern economy at a college student forum in Winona.

Dayton attended a forum Wednesday at Winona State University that also attracted students from St. Mary’s University. The hour-long event was billed as a conversation about Minnesota’s future.

Many of the questions focused on college affordability and jobs. The Winona Daily News reports students were interested in hearing how Dayton and the state can increase paid internships or work-study opportunities, freeze or lower tuition, and prepare students for high-quality jobs after graduation.

Dayton said work study is important, but as federal funding for the programs falls, the state just doesn’t have “deep enough pockets” to make up the difference.
