IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The City Council has approved laying off two employees in the city housing department.
The Iowa City Press-Citizen says (http://icp-c.com/18hMHQE ) the council approved the cuts on Tuesday night.
City officials say administrative revenue from the federal Section 8 program is down 30 percent, and other funding has been trimmed, too.
Cutting the two workers from the payroll will save an estimated $136,000 and leave the department with a surplus of less than $5,000 by the end of the fiscal year.
The laid-off workers will be preferred candidates if they apply for future openings.
