Des Moines police release details in shooting

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have released more details about a dead gunman who opened fire at homes and passing vehicles in a Des Moines neighborhood where he lived.

Des Moines police said at a news conference Thursday that 38-year-old Steven Jon Vogel shot about 100 rounds within 20 minutes Wednesday from his yard in a neighborhood on the city’s south side. He was injured during gunfire exchange with officers and died at a hospital.

One other man received injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police say Vogel had a handgun and a rifle when he was found unresponsive in his backyard. Records show he had a criminal record that included assault.

Two officers in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave.
