Former Des Moines Register managing editor dies

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Richard Tapscott, a former managing editor at The Des Moines Register, has died. He was 65.

Hamilton’s Funeral Home in Des Moines says Tapscott died Sunday. His wife, Barb Tapscott, told the Register (http://dmreg.co/18y2DRe ) that Tapscott had been diagnosed with colon cancer in October.

Tapscott worked for several newspapers during his career, including The Washington Post. He joined the Register in 1998 and worked his way up from metro editor to managing editor.

Tapscott left the Register in 2005 and joined the Wilmington News Journal in Delaware. He retired from newspapers in 2007 and began teaching at Drake University.

Lee Rood, an investigative reporter at the Register, says Tapscott was a beloved and respected journalist who had a meaningful career.
