Iowa school briefly locked down after gun report

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines middle school was placed on lockdown temporarily as authorities investigated a report of a student showing two other students a handgun.

Des Moines Public Schools says police found no weapon on the student following the report Thursday, and a search of the building turned up nothing. There are no reports of injuries.

Police Sgt. Jason Halifax tells The Des Moines Register (http://dmreg.co/IGFf7D ) that officials used surveillance cameras to trace the student’s route through the school from the moment the incident was reported. Officers also searched areas not on the video.

District spokesman Phil Roeder says two nearby schools serving students with disabilities were locked down for several minutes as a precaution.

The newspaper reports no charges have been filed.
