Iowa woman sentenced to jail for payroll scheme

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — A Clinton, Iowa, woman has been sentenced to 90 days in jail for organizing a payroll scheme and defrauding two Dubuque businesses.

The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports (http://bit.ly/JrxbJb) that 42-year-old Geraldine Hayward, formerly of Maquoketa, was sentenced this week in Dubuque District Court. Hayward previously pleaded guilty to a felony charge of forgery and misdemeanor, third-degree theft.

Hayward also was given five years’ probation and ordered to pay restitution to Diamond Jo Casino and Hy-Vee. A five-year prison sentence and $750 fine were suspended.

Hayward was arrested in April after state Department of Criminal Investigation agents discovered several people attempting to cash fraudulent payroll checks at Diamond Jo and Hy-Vee. Hayward was arrested on charges of organizing the payroll fraud, as well as forging the paychecks.
