Ex-Catholic school official sues system, diocese

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — The former chief financial officer of Sioux City’s Bishop Heelan Catholic school system has filed a religious discrimination lawsuit against the school system and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sioux City.

The Sioux City Journal (http://bit.ly/IUTC99) says David Newbrough asserts in the lawsuit that he was fired because he is not Catholic. He also says he was relieved of his duties as a volunteer basketball score keeper at Heelan High School in November in retaliation for filing a claim with the Iowa Civil Rights Commission.

Also named in the lawsuit are Bishop R. Walker Nickless and Dan Ryan, superintendent of education for the diocese.

Diocese director of communications Kristie Arlt declined to comment, saying it was considered a personnel matter.
