OSAGE, Iowa (AP) — Mitchell County officials say it may be too expensive to save a cupola atop a courthouse that will soon be destroyed.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reported Monday that county supervisors informally agreed to save the cupola when they approved plans to destroy the rest of the 155-year-old courthouse. But since getting estimates that saving the cupola would cost $20,000 and that the structure might collapse before reaching the ground, they have indicated preservation might not be possible.
Supervisor Shannon Paulus says officials might still work with groups to save the cupola if others would share in the expense and promise to build a platform for the cupola as well as maintain the structure.
Officials earlier decided to demolish the courthouse in Osage because they say it requires expensive renovations.
