Dubuque sees burglaries after death of residents

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Dubuque police say they’re investigating two burglaries in which thieves may have targeted homes where residents had died recently.

Lt. Scott Baxter tells the Telegraph Herald (http://bit.ly/1gUsUMf ) both burglaries occurred following a resident’s death and soon after an obituary was published in the local newspaper.

One burglary occurred last week while the family of Robert Schoenberger was attending his funeral. When relatives returned, they found the house in shambles and all their Christmas gifts opened. The thieves took $120.

Schoenberger’s daughter-in-law Shawna Lipper says the burglary left the already distraught family in shock.

Baxter recommends that people not list their home address in obituaries and ensure they have quality locks. They also could ask someone to stay in their home during a funeral.
