Duluth activists decry rash of homeless deaths

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — Community activists in Duluth say 29 homeless people died in the city this year, and they’re calling on the City Council to take action.

A Duluth News Tribune report (http://bit.ly/1cSabdn ) says they want a city commission to be created that would work to end hunger, homelessness and poverty.

Deb Holman, is an outreach worker with CHUM, a community service group that works with homeless people. She says many homeless people die before reaching their mid-40s, and she says poverty and addiction are two big causes.

She’s part of a group demanding that the city become more active in addressing the problem.

Duluth City Councilor Sharla Gardner says she’ll support the cause at the next council meeting next month. She says homelessness can be solved if people work together.
