LE PORTE CITY, Iowa (AP) — Police say a northeast Iowa woman lied about a home robbery and filed false reports to try to collect insurance money.
The Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office says 46-year-old Athena Ann Shillam, of La Porte City, reported on Dec. 20 a burglary at her mother’s home in nearby Gilbertville.
Shillam told deputies that the items stolen totaled nearly $5,000 in value. She also filed a claim with personal homeowners insurance.
Authorities later determined there was no burglary. They say Shillam filed a false report and filed a false insurance claim.
Shillam was arrested Friday. She has been charged with false report to law enforcement. Court records do not list an attorney.
