Waukee standoff ends with man’s death

WAUKEE, Iowa (AP) — Police say a man has been found dead in his home in Waukee after a standoff that stretched on through the day.

The Des Moines Register reports (http://dmreg.co/JFRVw2 ) a police tactical team entered the home Monday afternoon and found a man dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officials confirmed the man’s death but didn’t release his name until his relatives could be notified.

The incident in the Des Moines suburb began about 12:30 a.m. Monday when a woman called police to say her husband was armed and intoxicated.

Officers were able to help the woman leave but the man refused to come out. Negotiations began about 3:30 a.m. and continued through the day.

Lt. Troy Mapes says neighbors were alerted and a few opted to leave the area.
