Iowa City police charge man in yard work case

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa City police have arrested a man on charges that he billed an elderly woman an outrageous fee for minimal yard work.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports (http://icp-c.com/1dY8TkO ) police booked 24-year-old Matthew J. Brown into the Johnson County jail early Wednesday.

He’s charged with two counts of second-degree theft in connection with incidents July 23 and Oct. 21.

In July, Brown allegedly offered to cut down a small tree. After doing so, he charged the woman $2,500, though police say the fee shouldn’t have been more than $400.

He allegedly returned to the woman in October and offered to do some yard work. The woman says he “pushed something around the yard” briefly, then sought a large payment. She paid him $1,200.

Court records didn’t indicate an attorney for Brown.
