DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa senator is asking the U.S. Senate to confirm appointees to a federal election commission so a decision can be made about whether Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz is improperly using money for voter fraud investigations.
Schultz, a Republican, insists using $280,000 of federal Help America Vote Act money to investigate voter fraud is proper.
Sen. Tom Courtney, a Burlington Democrat, says it’s a misuse of the money. He sent a letter Wednesday to the U.S. Senate Committee on Rules and Regulations pushing the chairmen to confirm presidential nominees to the four-member Election Assistance Commission, which oversees vote act money. The commission has had no members since 2011 and Congress has not approved nominees.
With no members, the commission cannot determine whether Schultz is improperly spending the money.
