Sioux City considers return to 2-way streets

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Sioux City motorists may soon have more traveling options as the city considers converting some downtown streets from one-way to two-way.

The Sioux City Journal reports (http://bit.ly/JI6aB3 ) officials have awarded a $140,000 contract for design changes that would allow two-way traffic on three streets.

The City Council would need to approve any changes.

Ragen Cote, executive director of the business group Downtown Partners, says her organization supports the change in hopes that it could make downtown more pedestrian friendly and help retailers.

Public Works Director Jade Dundas says one of the biggest challenges of such a conversion will be accommodating buses.

Sioux City switched the streets in question to one-way in the 1970s.
