Suspect named in 2012 death of retired Iowa grocer

NASHUA, Iowa (AP) — Investigators have identified a suspect in the death of a retired northeast Iowa grocery store owner found dead in his burglarized home in October 2012.

Chickasaw County Sheriff Todd Miller said Wednesday that Randy Lee Patrie of Charles City is under investigation in the death of 70-year-old Carl “Kenny” Gallmeyer in Nashua.

Patrie has not been charged but is being held in federal custody on burglary and firearms charges.

Federal prosecutors said in a Jan. 3 filing that they intend to present evidence at sentencing that Patrie broke into Gallmeyer’s home, shot him while he was in bed and stole three guns and other items. They say investigators later recovered the murder weapon, a sawed-off-shotgun that Patrie has been convicted of illegally possessing.

Patrie’s lawyer didn’t immediately return a message.
