Authorities: Teen started Iowa school fire

CENTERVILLE, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have charged a teenager with starting a fire last week that forced the evacuation of a high school in south-central Iowa.

Investigators initially said that the Jan. 9 fire began in an electrical outlet and spread to a nearby couch in the lounge of Centerville High School.

But Des Moines television station KCCI reports ( that police have charged a 14-year-old boy with causing the fire.

The school reopened Thursday after work to clean up and repair extensive smoke damage. Fire damage was contained to the teachers’ lounge. Centerville Police said that a teacher had closed the lounge door, which helped contain the flames.
