CLEAR LAKE, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says a pickup truck broke through the ice on Clear Lake and sank.
The DNR says the incident happened Friday afternoon as 40-year-old Christopher Cash was driving on the northern Iowa lake near the Dodge’s Point area.
Cash and a 24-year-old passenger, Branden Schare, were able to get out of the pickup before it sank.
The truck is expected to be removed from the lake within a few days.
Ben Bergman, a DNR conservation officer, says recent high winds have been hitting open water around aerators, causing wave action under the ice that can create soft spots.
He says people driving on the ice need to pay attention to the wind speed and direction.
