Pilot program aims at cleaner roadsides in Iowa

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Several groups are teaming up for a pilot program aimed at better roadside cleanup in east-central Iowa.

The state Department of Transportation says the three-month program will involve recruitment of groups and individuals to adopt about two miles of Iowa roadside. They will pledge to clean their designated area at least twice a year.

Volunteers will be provided with safety vests and bags. Roadside signs will alert drivers that the area is maintained by volunteers.

Environmentalist Doug Elam will lead the cooperative effort, which involves the organization Keep Iowa Beautiful, the city of Cedar Rapids, and other groups.
