BREMER CO. , Iowa – A north Iowa man convicted of first-degree murder in 2009 is having his latest appeal denied.
The Iowa Court of Appeals has denied Lawrence Hamby’s appeal for postconviction relief. Police say the Sumner man beat and strangled Frank McKinney to death in 2006. Authorities say McKinney’s son Nate had Lawrence over around the time of the killing.
Hamby had argued that his trial counsel was ineffective in not moving to suppress his statements to investigators and in not allowing him to testify, among others. A lower court denied his appeal and now the higher court is agreeing with that ruling.
