Cleaning off your gas meter

KIMT NEWS 3 — All that never-ending cold weather could pose a “chilling” situation for people.
The snow and ice have Minnesota officials reminding you to keep your natural gas meter clear of the elements.
Officials say any buildup of snow or ice could block the regulator vent, causing it to malfunction or possibly even worse.
“From the standpoint of ice and snow on the meter, it will probably pretty much lock up,” Austin Utilities General Manager Mark Nibaur said. “But, obviously, if they clean it off and something happens or if ice accumulates and starts breaking off, it could cause damage to the meter set or out basically piping that could cause a leak yes.”
He adds you should clean your meter off with a broom or something with bristles and not to use a shovel or pick.
