A local leader is speaking out on an issue that’s been front and center on both a national and state level.
Austin Mayor Tom Stiehm is joining other Minnesota mayors in the “Raise the Wage” effort. The goal is to urge the state legislature to increase the minimum wage to at least $9.50 with increases for inflation.
“People are working, people are willing to work in town, but with some of the families, the larger families in town, with the wages they’re making, they’re still hitting poverty rates,” said Mayor Stiehm.
So far, about a dozen other mayors across Minnesota are speaking out in favor of raising the minimum wage. That includes those in Duluth, Hibbing, St. Paul and Minneapolis.
