Bathtub Safety

MASON CITY, Iowa   An investigation is underway into the possible drowning death of an Iowa child over the weekend. The incident happened in Belle Plaine. Investigators say a father left the room for a brief moment while his small children were in the tub. When he came back in, he found the one year old girl unconscious.

This is prompting talk about safety in the bathtub and a reminder that young children should never be left alone, even for a short time.

Sydney Crippen is the head coordinator at Family Connections in Mason City, says that’s not the only thing to keep in mind.

“I don’t think a lot of people realize this, but children can drown in as little as 2-3 inches of water. So just to give them your entire attention,” said Crippen.

Crippen advises parents to use bathtub safety mats to prevent children from slipping and faucet covers and always remove all sharp objects like razors away from the area.
