Midwifery could be changing in Iowa

MIDWIFE LICENSES VO 6

CLEAR LAKE, Iowa  Right now in the state of Iowa, you don’t have to be licensed to be a certain type of midwife, but soon that may be changing because of a bill in the works.

In the state of Iowa, there are three different types of midwives: certified nurse midwives, certified professional midwives, and direct-entry midwives.
The “direct entry” midwives do not have to have a license, but some want that to change.

One local clinic that has a professional midwife on staff, says this piece of legislation would be a positive step in the state.

“Anybody in any sort of licensed venue, I don’t care if it’s meat packing or whatever it is, we have to have licensure and appropriate education,” says Dr. Gabrielson.

The bill also includes a penalty if midwifery is practiced without a license.  Gabrielson says it all comes down to safety.
