Jury clears Iowa doctors in death after surgery

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Two Iowa doctors have been cleared in a lawsuit over the death of a University of Northern Iowa professor shortly after he had hernia surgery.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (http://bit.ly/1eGYzPH ) a jury sided with the doctors in a lawsuit filed by the estate of math professor Hari Shankar after his 2008 death.

Shankar died at the age of 77 with a ruptured colon just days after undergoing hernia repair surgery.

The lawsuit accused doctors Neil McMahon and Gerald Wait of mistreating Shankar. Covenant Medical Center and Sartori Hospital were also defendants.

The jury sided with the doctors and hospitals Friday.
