What Lent is all about

MASON CITY, IA – Many folks went to church to be marked with their annual ashes as a reminder to them that they were once ash themselves.

In the Christian faith, the season is a time of penance, prayer, and fasting. 40 days before the Easter holiday, Christians “fast” or give up some of their favorite foods, but a local Pastor says that you can also give instead of give up.

“It’s not just giving things up for Lent, it’s focusing more on our spiritual life, prayer, worship, and giving as well as cutting out or giving up, giving more and so often times people will choose good deeds to do during the season of Lent,” says Pastor Tom Dettmer of Trinity Luthern Church in Mason City.
