MASON CITY, Iowa – Planning is underway for a benefit to remember one North Iowa teacher who lost his life in 2012.
The “Royal Run” honors Royal Wentworth of Mason City who passed away a year and a half ago while on a run with his middle school cross-country team.
Royal taught and coached at Mason City Schools for 27 years.
Organizers say this is the best way to celebrate the life of a man who died doing what he loved.
“Royal had an immense passion for kids in town. So this event will be able to bring together people who are grieving. We can channel our grief into doing something positive in celebrating the great guy that he was,” said Wife, Maria Wentworth.
The 5K run is scheduled for September 6.
All proceeds from the run would go to the Royal Wentworth Memorial Scholarship fund that has been established at Mason City High School.
“Soon after he died my girls and I knew we just wanted to have a run for him running was his passion and we just had to do something that involves running. Something to keep his memory going to run his way to get so many people involved,” said Wentworth.
