Trees are a natural source of energy efficiency and this spring the Mason City area will be home to nearly 100 new trees.
That’s thanks to a tree planting event supported by Alliant Energy and Trees Forever.
The Norris Youth Softball Complex will be getting about 8 trees.
The plan is to plant about 70 total trees around Mason City.
But it won’t be just any kind of tree, organizers of the event say they have a strategy when it comes to which trees will go where.
“As we know if we plant all the same kind of trees like the Ash, the Ash Borer will come along and take out some of those trees so what we do is get a variety of trees that are native to north Iowa,” says Jim Collins from Alliant Energy.
He says the trees aren’t just nice to look at, they also help with energy conservation.
“As us in the energy business, we like to conserve where we can. You plant a tree in the right place around your house; you’ll save air conditioning expenses as the shade keeps your house cooler,” he says.
The event is planned for May 9th and the community is welcome to come and help.
