MASON CITY, Iowa – Legislation that’s made its way through the Iowa Senate would give authorities another tool for investigations.
Under current law, special state agents with the Iowa Department of Public Safety can obtain a search warrant to track your car using a GPS device.
But now, the proposed bill is pushing to have all law enforcement agencies be able to use this tool with a warrant.
Sheriff Kevin Pals with Cerro GordoCounty says it would be very beneficial for them to be able to work on their own cases without outside help.
“We’re involving other agencies that don’t need to know necessarily information or get involved in the case because they are to involved with their state cases so this is a great way for local law enforcement to get out jobs done more efficiently,” said Pals.
Pals says an example of cases where this would be used would be drug or theft.
