Downtown Des Moines building destroyed


DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines city official says the downtown Younkers building ravaged by a massive fire early Saturday cannot be salvaged.

Assistant City Manager Matt Anderson tells the Des Moines Register ( that the115-year-old building will have to be demolished. However, Anderson says, the site can be redeveloped.

No one was injured in the fire that was first reported just before 1 a.m. Saturday. Firefighters arrived to find flames leaping from the upper floors of the seven-floor building, which dates to 1899. About an hour later, the top floors of the building had collapsed.

Downtown streets and skywalks in the area have been closed, and city buses have been detoured to avoid the Walnut Street area.
