4-H Outdoors kids learn about geocaching

FLOYD, IA – With such nice weather earlier this week, many parents try to get their kids out the door to play outside and away from the TV screen.

The Mitchell county 4-H Outdoor Club is doing just that.

Kids who attended learned all about geocaching.

All over the U.S. are hidden “treasures” that can be found by finding exact coordinates.

It teaches kids about the process as well as following compass directions, but most of all, it gets them outside.

“My whole goal in everything I do is to get the kids out of the house and no child should be left indoors, so that’s what this is all about,” says leader MaryJo Burkgren.

Now there are apps for iPhones and Androids which allow you to geocache without buying a special device.

It is a great family activity for those warmer days coming up and you never know what you can find.

In the Mason City area alone, there are more than 10,000 geodes hidden.
